More than 3,000,000 mobile numbers ported in Romania


 
 
Since 2008, when number portability was launched in Romania, more than 3.66 million users have benefited from this service, i.e. 3 million mobile telephony users and approximately 654 thousand fixed telephony users. More than a quarter of all the numbers were ported only in 2016, when 939,663 users switched operators while keeping their telephone number. 
The monthly average number of porting processes corresponding to 2016 kept growing - from 70,373, on average, in 2015, to 78,305 in 2016. December and November 2016 were the months with the highest number of porting processes – 110,587 in December and91,838 in November.
Mobile telephony
82% (3,010,150) of the total number of porting processes performed so far are mobile telephony numbers. RCS & RDS is the provider that received most ported numbers on its network – 1,058,527 – followed by Vodafone – 743,592 numbers, Orange – 696,746, Telekom Romania Mobile Communications – 465,914 and Telekom Romania Communications – 44,556 ported mobile telephony numbers.
In 2016, mobile telephony providers attracted 879,330 users through porting processes, respectively 94% of all the users who ported their numbers on 2016. Most of these chose RCS & RDS – 434,816, whereas Orange received 182,948 ported users, Vodafone – 175,296, Telekom Romania Mobile Communications – 63,916, and Telekom Romania Communications – 22,320. 
Fixed telephony
As for the fixed telephony, 25 providers received the 654,572 numbers ported since the launch of number portability. Most of these were ported to RCS & RDS – 179,125, Vodafone – 151,532, UPC Romania – 134,636, Orange – 128,115 and Telekom Romania Communications – 25,500. Depending on residence area, most fixed telephony users who ported their numbers are from Bucharest – 197,909, the Capital being followed by the counties of Cluj – 37,532 ported numbers, Timiș – 32,219, Prahova – 29,414 and Galați – 24,942.
In 2016, the users ported half of the 2015 amount of fixed telephony numbers. Most of the 60,333fixed telephony numbers ported in 2016 went to the largest providers, thus: RCS & RDS – 22,084, Orange – 15,117, UPC Romania – 9,905, Vodafone – 5,721 and Telekom Romania Communications – 2,613. 
 
About number portability
Number portability gives full freedom of choice to telephony users as it enables them to keep their telephone number, while switching providers.
ANCOM makes available to the users the website www.portabilitate.ro, where they can find the network of any ported telephone number used in Romania. The website offers details on the steps to be taken in order to port a telephone number, answers to frequently asked questions in case of porting a number, as well as advice for preventing possible problems in the porting process. Advice is provided based on the factual situations encountered by the users and presented to the Authority.

The launch of number portability has made network identification based on the number format impossible.
